Duke University’s Board of Trustees announced Saturday a 3.9 percent undergraduate tuition increase for the 2010-11 school year. This tuition increase brings the total yearly cost to$51,865 for Duke undergraduate students.

The demand for Spanish-speaking therapists in Orange County is now more profound than ever before.

Officials at local crisis centers have had trouble filling the void caused by the closing of El Centro Latino, the main resource center for Spanish-speakers in the community, said Carolina Alzuru, Latino services coordinator for the Orange County Rape Crisis Center.

RALEIGH — Hundreds of people gathered at Shaw University on Saturday, chanting and singing hymns to promote education reform for the state.

The Historic Thousands on Jones Street event, also known as HK on J, is an annual march to the state legislature led by the N.C. NAACP to present its 14-point agenda.

This year, the crowd focused on education reform and protested against the resegregation of public schools.

UNC-Greensboro and Mount Olive College officials said the  programs will help students save money and get an early start on their plans for graduate school.

The UNC-system Board of Governors is trying to persuade state legislators to create a spring tax-free weekend to help students buying textbooks for the spring semester.

But that plan could cause the state to lose as much as $20 million a year, according to a 2008-09 report from the N.C. General Assembly fiscal research division.

UNC-system President Erskine Bowles will sign an agreement with the U.S. Marines Corps Forces Special Operations Command and Marine Corps Installations East today to cement a partnership between the two groups.

One of Duke University’s partners in China might be associated with cyberattacks on Google.

The New York Times reported Thursday that investigators have traced the origins of some of the online attacks to computers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Administrators formalized Duke’s partnership with that university in January to build a 200-acre campus in Kunshan, China.

UNC-system schools are getting ready for the switch to the system’s new health insurance plan.

By August 1, every student enrolled in the system must have health insurance coverage.

There are five schools — UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State University, Appalachian State, East Carolina University and UNC-Wilmington — that don’t yet require students to have insurance.

UNC-system President Erskine Bowles played a key role in balancing the federal budget in 1997. President Barack Obama is asking him to step up once again.

Obama signed an executive order Thursday that establishes a bipartisan federal commission responsible for crafting a plan to reduce the federal deficit.

The woman who falsely accused several Duke University lacrosse players of rape in 2006 was arrested early Thursday for attempting to kill her boyfriend, Durham police said.

Police said Crystal Gail Mangum, 33, set her boyfriend’s clothing on fire and tried to stab him. She then tried to set another fire after police arrived, police said.

Mangum’s bond is set at $1 million.

After years of planning, UNC-Charlotte has finally secured most of the funding needed for a varsity football program.

The student fee increase approved last week by the UNC-system Board of Governors will provide $40 million of the $45 million needed to construct a football stadium and accompanying facilities.
